Your Activities Don’t Matter (Until You Reflect on Them)

Important message for Grade 11 students (and parents). Grade 11 is almost done!
Before Grade 12 begins and the application rush takes over, this is a golden window period you shouldn’t miss.
Now is the perfect time to pause and reflect on everything you’ve been involved in so far—academics, extracurriculars, leadership roles, competitions, internships, community work, hobbies… all of it.
Not just what you did, but:
* Why did you choose it?
* What did you learn?
* How did it challenge you?
* How did it shape your interests or values?
This reflection is what transforms a simple activity list into a powerful resume for university applications—one that highlights impact, growth, and authenticity, not just participation. Let us share three examples of an activity list vs a reflection:
Activity: “I volunteered at a community centre.”
Reflection: “Working with underprivileged children made me realise how unequal access to education is, which sparked my interest in studying economics and public policy.”
Activity: “I run a small baking page on Instagram.”
Reflection: “Managing my baking page taught me consistency, customer communication, and how to turn a personal interest into something entrepreneurial. I realised the critical role that logistics and supply chain play in a business.
Activity: “I attended a summer program in business.”
Reflection: “The program made me question how businesses scale sustainably, which led me to start reading more about startups and venture capital.”
These reflections on your activities become gold when you later brainstorm for university essays and personal statements. The best essays don’t come from last-minute thinking. They come from self-reflection done over time.
Right now, students like you have something precious: time and mental space. Use it well. Start reflecting. Start documenting.
Your future self will thank you!
